Earlier work

My first Marketing and Creative Director role was with Capital Newspapers, in Madison, WI. I had the opportunity to build the department from scratch — hiring two designers, a research analyst, a copywriter, and two project managers (along with some freelance design). In that time, we took the empty “madison.com” domain and turned it into the number one newspaper website in the country. We also won more than 60 regional Addy Awards, more than any of the competing local agencies.

The marketing team grew to 14 permanent members and madison.com to a new $100,000 revenue stream in its first three years. We also grew Sunday Wisconsin State Journal circulation at a time when Sunday, and all, newspaper circulation began to decline. Here is some of the work that propelled the revenue and circulation growth.

The award-winning campaign and content strategy were key parts of the marketing strategy making madison.com the #1 newspaper website in the US.

The Capital Times campaign won the 2006 ADDY Award "Best in Show" and put The Capital Times back on the Madison, WI map.

This Wisconsin State Journal campaign was featured on the cover of an international newspaper publication and subsequently borrowed by papers around the world.

Jerry's Hot Picks - the most successful brand I created. We developed games for pro and college football, the NCAA basketball tournament, NASCAR racing and PGA golf.

It remains active today and has generated more than $1 million in new and incremental revenue for the Capital Newspapers family of products.
